ACS Documentation

The primary documentation for the various CEPR data extracts are the programs themselves. They provide an exact description of the definition of each of the variables and, in most cases, are heavily annotated.

Lists of variables with short descriptions and lists of variables with their values labels in the CEPR ACS extract can be viewed below. For more information on each variable, including notes and details on their relation to the underlying ACS data, please see the program files.

The Census Bureau has produced a great deal of useful documentation about the ACS PUMS, some of which we have made available below. Additional technical documentation for the raw ACS PUMS data can be found on the Census website.

For each year, the Census provides Subject Definitions and Data Dictionary files to help understand each variable in the ACS. Code Lists are also included, and contain a large number of coded responses, such as industry and occupation.
