CPS ORG Programs

The following Stata programs create the CEPR CPS ORG Uniform Extracts. While you can always just download or order the CEPR ORG data, these programs provide clear documentation of the CEPR ORG variables. In addition, you can edit the do-files to create your own modifications to the CEPR ORG extracts.

To run the CEPR CPS ORG programs, you will also need additional do-files and data. For data from 1979-2002, you need to purchase (for $100) the Merged Outgoing Rotation Group data extracts from the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER), which are the underlying source of the CEPR ORG extracts for 1979-2002. From 2003 on, you'll need to download the raw CPS data directly from the joint Bureau of the Census-Bureau of Labor Statistics CPS home page, as well as the CEPR CPS Basic programs.

Once you have the data you need, for data years 1979-2002, load all the files below into the same directory and run the CPS ORG master "do file" in Stata. For data from 2003 on, you should also load the CEPR CPS basic do files into their own directory. For things to run smoothly, you'll have to adjust the directory structure at the top of the cepr_org_master.do file to match the directory structure in your computer.

Since we regularly update files, we recommend that if you use the CEPR ORG extracts for a particular project that you copy the versions of the data files you use in your analysis into a write-protected directory. That way, you'll always be able to reproduce your earlier analysis, even if we've made subsequent revisions to the CEPR extracts.

The latest CEPR ORG programs are Version 1.5 :
